How to Access Peptides Legally in Australia

The Legal Pathway

In Australia, most therapeutic peptides are classified as Schedule 4 (Prescription Only) medicines. This means there is a clear, legal pathway to access them - but it requires working within the regulated healthcare system.

Here is the process from start to finish.

Step 1: Consultation with a Registered Practitioner

Your first step is booking a consultation with an AHPRA-registered medical practitioner - either a GP or a specialist. Telehealth consultations are accepted for peptide prescriptions in most cases.

What to Expect

  1. The practitioner will assess your medical history and current health status
  2. They will discuss the specific peptide therapy you are interested in and whether it is clinically appropriate
  3. Blood work may be required before or after commencing treatment
  4. The consultation typically lasts 15 to 30 minutes

Telehealth Options

Several clinics now offer telehealth consultations specifically for peptide therapies. When choosing a provider, verify:

  1. The practitioner holds a valid AHPRA registration
  2. The clinic does not guarantee a prescription before the consultation
  3. They require a genuine clinical assessment, not just a form submission

Step 2: Obtaining a Prescription

If the practitioner determines peptide therapy is appropriate, they will issue a prescription. Important details:

  1. The prescription must specify the exact peptide, dose, and route of administration
  2. It will typically be sent directly to a compounding pharmacy
  3. Prescriptions for Schedule 4 peptides are valid for 6 months with a limited number of repeats
  4. The practitioner may require follow-up consultations to monitor progress

Step 3: Dispensing Through a Compounding Pharmacy

Most peptide prescriptions are filled by TGA-licensed compounding pharmacies rather than standard retail pharmacies. These pharmacies prepare the peptide product to the prescribed specification.

What Compounding Pharmacies Provide

  1. Sterile preparation of injectable peptide products
  2. Bacteriostatic water and appropriate syringes
  3. Storage and handling instructions
  4. Certificate of analysis for the compounded product (on request)

Step 4: Costs and Timeframes

Peptide therapies are generally not covered by the PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme), so consumers pay out of pocket. Typical costs include:

  1. Initial consultation - $80 to $200 (may be partially Medicare rebatable)
  2. Blood work - $0 to $150 depending on Medicare eligibility
  3. Compounded peptide product - $80 to $300 per month depending on the peptide and dosage
  4. Follow-up consultations - $50 to $150 every 3 to 6 months

Total Monthly Cost

Most patients can expect to pay between $100 and $400 per month for ongoing peptide therapy through legitimate channels. While this may be more expensive than grey market alternatives, it comes with medical oversight, quality assurance, and legal protection.

Why the Legal Pathway Matters

Following the prescription pathway ensures you receive a product that has been prepared to pharmaceutical standards, with known purity and potency. It also means you have a qualified practitioner monitoring your health throughout treatment.
